You are a nurse caring for a patient that is terminally ill on a medical unit. During morning rounds you overhear the physician say that the family requested that the patient is not to be resuscitated and that he wrote the order. You are confused by this since you have been caring for the patient and his wife for the last week and have been planning his transfer back to the nursing home.
When you question the physician, he states that the children have made the request. How would you proceed?
In this forum, we will be discussing ethical issues that affect nursing practice. A new ethical dilemma will be posted monthly for discussion.
Ethical Dilemma
A Nurse working in labor and delivery. She is caring for a pregnant woman who is accompanied by the father of the baby. He appears supportive. The woman relates that she and the father of the baby are HIV positive. The Grandparents come in to see the woman in labor as the nursing is starting the infusion of AZT to decrease perinatal transmission. The Grandmother wants to know what is in the IV fluid.
What would you say?
